The cinema of Andorra
The story of Andorran cinema is a perfect example of quality over quantity, a tale of surprising creative punches from one of Europe's smallest nations. While not known for a large-scale film industry, its contribution to the art form is both unique and impressive. The country can proudly claim one of animation's most creative minds, Josep Pozo. An Andorran director, his beautiful and imaginative feature Nocturna triumphed at the Spanish Goya Awards, a remarkable achievement that brought international acclaim to the principality's doorstep. This proves that a compelling vision can emerge from anywhere. It’s also no surprise that Andorra's breathtaking mountain scenery has long served as a spectacular backdrop for international productions, offering a slice of alpine drama for the silver screen. The dramatic peaks and snowy slopes of the Pyrenees provide a natural film set that has been utilised by filmmakers from across Europe. What makes Andorran film culture truly special is its focus on fostering new talent. The passion for film is alive and well, championed by events like the Ull-Nu festival, which supports and showcases the next generation of audiovisual creators. It’s a cinema defined not by volume, but by individual brilliance and a deep love for the craft.

69Woody Woodpecker and Friends 1929
With arguably the most famous laugh of any cartoon character in history ("ha-ha-ha-HA-ha"), Woody Woodpecker pecked his way into our lives through a 1940 Andy Panda theatrical short entitled Knock Knock. Woody continued to appear in short films throughout the 40's and 50's, and in 1957, the Kellogg's company packaged these theatrical works into the syndicated package The Woody Woodpecker Show. Walter Lantz created the famed bird, and in the show's early days, the animator would host from his office, demonstrating how cartoons were made by showing the viewers at home such essentials as painting cels and drawing storyboards. Woody, an obnoxious mischief-maker, would usually star in the shorts, occasionally taking a backseat to his friends Andy Panda, Wally Walrus, Gabby Gator, Buzz Buzzard, Oswald the Rabbit, The Beary Family and Arctic penguin Chilly Willy.
